The only metal vocals I can do really well IMHO is the real brutal death metal vocals ala Chris Barnes, Corpsegrinder, Glen Benton etc.
You must use the power from you diaphragm not you throat, you will fuck your voice. If you are doing it right it shouldn't hurt.
Breathing right is important too. Keeping the air leaving you consistent is important to making the growls consistent.
I find practice without over straining you voice allows you to go deeper too. Keeping your mouth in a circular shape will also add more power and resonance to your growl.
I've heard professional rock singers say stay away from caffeine and alcohol as they dry out your vocals chords. Also to stay away from milky drinks as they cause phlegm to form.
Also apparently room temperature water is good.
Saying that my and Ken perform better after a few alcoholic drinks so go and figure that out.

I find anything that gets the ming going on in the throat is good for death metal vocals, but obviously not for standard rock vocals.

My main rule is to get your breathing right. Once you have that then you can scream all night long!! Alcohol really does help like as it soothes the throat. fannybatter is always good for the throat to!!!!!

| he uses effects though. Pig squeals are the way forward like its a really weird technique aswell, everyone thinks you have to inhale to them but its all about how you shape your tounge and the noise you make withput your tounge curled back is shit but as soon as you move your tounge you get a pig squeal.
